I’ve come to believe that, for certain issues, talk therapy alone may not always allow for deep healing and restoration of the nervous system in the same way as somatic therapy and Reiki can.
When I use Reiki in my clinical counselling work, I seek to clear energetic blockages so that my clients can exchange energy with the world around them in a healthy way.
Energy healing is founded on the belief that an energetic imprint occurs when we interact with our environment and the people in it. The mind, body and spirit, and our thoughts, feelings, and mind states can all be understood as different forms of energy. Energetic blocks consist of old wounds and traumas, fears, and limiting beliefs.
Chakras are centers that exchange energy between our bodies and our environment. The flow of energy through each chakra is distinct and blockages often lead to unique difficulties for people. Fortunately, blocked chakras can be addressed through both energy healing and therapy, and I like to use a combination of both.
My clients often report that Reiki helps them feel lighter and more grounded.
Common reasons our clients seek Reiki energy healing to compliment their clinical counselling include:

Our brain has different wave patterns. In our everyday life when we are thinking, analyzing, or completing tasks, we are using low beta brain waves. When we are in fight-or-flight or our sympathetic nervous system is activated, we are operating with high beta brain waves. When we begin to slow down and our nervous systems are regulated, our brain moves to use alpha brain waves, an essential restorative state that is often difficult for us to access, except through activities such as meditation and Reiki.
Alpha brain waves act like a bridge between ordinary reality and an altered state of consciousness, a state that is highly restful and rejuvenating to the mind and body. Using western-informed clinical counselling, I help clients reach this state using mindfulness, by helping them slow down and connect with their inner world and body. During Reiki however, my clients sometimes report experiences of the even-deeper theta brain state, which is also highly restorative to their nervous systems.
In everyday life, we operate primarily in a beta brain wave state. In this state, clients may find it difficult to shift out of patterned ways of thinking, feeling, and behaving. When we change our beta brain wave states into alpha and theta states, whole new possibilities emerge for us to change our subconscious beliefs, to work with our emotions, bodies and nervous systems, all in addition to attending to our energy and spirit in a new way. When we activate slower brain waves, an opening occurs in the mind and body and we gain safe access to unconscious material for healing. I have found that Reiki is a powerful tool for reaching that restorative state of consciousness.
